Mas

1 / 5 20 x 20

Mas is different because it uses a completely different way to process the raw materials, this gives the Mas range a subtle texture that comes from the coarser grains and mixture of different raw materials.

About Mas

Alusid was founded on the belief that we should make the most of ‘waste’ materials. As such, we collaborate with trusted suppliers to bring our mission to life. Always ensuring that we use as high a percentage of recycled content in our products as we possibly can.

The physical embodiment of this is Mas – a new collection of floor & wall tiles, available in four versatile shades, and made from between 95% and 98.5% recycled materials (depending on the colour).

By transforming an abundant volume of material that would otherwise likely end up in landfill, we’re utilising unwanted, readily available matter, harnessing its practical properties such as durability, and applying our unique manufacturing and design techniques to produce a product that considerately serves both people and the planet.

Mas is our first range to have a 3rd party verified EPD. We worked with the Materials Processing Institute to establish the full life cycle from cradle to grave for our unique producitn process. Download the EPD

According to published comparison EPD's, Mas is also one of the lowest emission floor tiles on the market. Just 5.95kg per square meter compared to 10.7kg per square m2 for the average Spanish ceramic tile.

What makes Mas different?

Whereas other tile companies mine their raw materials and often recycle their own breakages, Mas uses by-products aggregated from multiple industries, and from various parts of their production process - both pre and post fired.

Crucially, we avoid spray drying – instead using a unique low energy dry granulation process. By only adding a small amount of water to recovered raw materials that have already been processed by other industries, we are able to reduce the use of natural gas and electric by approximately 45% compared with the average Spanish producer.

What is spray drying? And what’s so bad about it?

Most of the world’s ceramic tiles use an industrial process called spray drying to prepare the raw materials. This involves blending raw materials in water and milling in large ball mills. The resulting slurry of material is turned into granules by atomising it into droplets - by spraying - then rapidly evaporating the water from the sprayed droplets to produce hollow spheres - using hot air created by burning natural gas.

Why Mas? And why now?

The launch of our Mas floor & wall tile collection marks a major milestone in our journey. As we’ve outlined, Alusid was founded out of a shared desire and resulting exploration into diverting ‘waste’, low value material from its predetermined end destination to, not only breathe new life into it, but completely transform it into visually beautiful, practically unparalleled architectural surface products.

From our manufacturing facility in Lancashire, this passion spurred the pioneering development of tiles, solid surfaces, tabletops, and wallcoverings for internal and external use - all utilising at least 98% recycled materials. The next logical step was to apply our unique methods to creating floor tiles in collaboration with a manufacturing partner – enabling us to produce product on a larger scale.

The fact our Mas floor & wall tiles contain between 95% and 98.5% recycled materials (depending on the colour), and according to our industry research, are one of the lowest emission floor tile offerings on the market, makes us extremely proud.

Technical

Our materials are dry pressed and then sintered, our tile products fall under British Standards for ceramic tiles. Independent formal test certificates are available on request.

Care & Maintenance

Silicastone products are easy to care for and can be left in their natural state in many cases. However, depending on your chosen application it may be necessary to periodically apply a surface sealant to the product.

Installation

Most of our products are, by their nature quite heavy, akin to natural stone. Weights will vary depending on product but they can weigh up to 45kg per m2, so we only recommend installing on a suitable substrate.

Sustainability

Our products are made from no less than 98% recycled materials and approximately 60% of those materials currently ends up in landfill. For some of our coloured ranges we need to add materials that are not recycled, but our products are always more than 98% recycled.
